App fee: ~€90 (consulate) + €156 (AIMA processing) + €160 (residence card), about €406 total
Processing: 2–4 months at consulate; AIMA timing varies by location and backlog

The D7 is Portugal's passive-income residency visa for retirees and applicants living on pensions, dividends, rental income, or similar non-employment income. Apply at a Portuguese consulate, then complete your residence permit steps with AIMA after arrival.

Portuguese Bank Account with Minimum Balance

You must open a Portuguese bank account before or during your visa process. Many applicants show at least 12 months of the minimum wage requirement, or about €11,040 for a single applicant in 2026.

Where:Novo Banco, Millennium BCP, Santander Portugal — all allow non-resident account openingCost:€0–€50 (account fees vary)Timeline:2–4 weeks (can often do online or via power of attorney)
💡Novo Banco and Millennium BCP are popular with expats. Some people use a lawyer or relocation service to open the account remotely.

Where:Your landlord, property agent, or Airbnb (for short-term bridge)Cost:Typically first month + security deposit (variable)Timeline:1–4 weeks to secure housing
💡Airbnb or short-term rentals are generally NOT accepted. You need a formal rental contract (Contrato de Arrendamento) ideally notarized or with fiscal stamps.
FBI Criminal Background Check

A federal criminal background check (FBI Identity History Summary). Must be apostilled.

Where:State police or Department of Justice for each relevant stateCost:$25–$75 per state + apostille feesTimeline:2–6 weeks per state

Where:SafetyWing, Cigna Global, AXA, IMG Global — see our comparison guideCost:$50–$200/month depending on age and planTimeline:Same day to 1 week

Where:Portuguese consulate in the US, or a Portuguese lawyer/fiscal representativeCost:€0 (direct) or €100–€200 (via lawyer)Timeline:1–3 weeks via consulate, faster via lawyer
💡Get this first — nearly everything else depends on it. A fiscal representative (non-resident NIF sponsor) is needed until you establish residency.

2–4 recent passport-style photos (35mm × 45mm, white background).

Where:CVS, Walgreens, or any passport photo serviceCost:$10–$15Timeline:Same day

A personal letter explaining your reasons for moving to Portugal, your income sources, where you plan to live, and your ties to home.
